To become the Champion, you must defeat the Champion.
What is the Bannerman Shield?Named for Australian cricket legend Charles Bannerman (see right), the Bannerman Shield is Test cricket's hypothetical perennial trophy. Test cricket has never had such a competition before, but they are a familiar concept in other sports. Often, they are unofficial (such as the Unofficial Football World Championship and the Raeburn Shield) but there is precedent for a perennial trophy with official recognition in the form of the Ranfurly Shield in New Zealand domestic rugby union. Given Test cricket's proud history of bilateral competition, the Shield is arguably the fairest way to crown a Champion team.

Australia's Charles Bannerman was the batsman who faced the first ball in Test cricket, scored the first run, then the first fifty, then the first century in the format. By the end of his magnificent unbeaten 165, he had scored 67.35% of Australia's runs for the innings. This record still stands 142 years later.
